Illustrations by Chris Hardman
The science of ecology studies the relationship of Earth’s organisms with their environment. Sadly, we organisms known as humans have become increasingly disconnected from our natural surroundings. In 2001, artist and Antenna founder Chris Hardman created The ECOlogical Calendar to help heal that breach. Published annually by Pomegranate, The ECOlogical Calendar tracks the year’s passing with reference to the changing relationships among Earth, sea, and sky and the natural events marking the procession of life from season to season.
In this notecard collection, four of Hardman’s artworks illustrate the seasons of the year. Each card’s back includes a poetic “ecologue” describing a few of the natural processes taking place during that season in the Northern Hemisphere. Beautiful in themselves, the cards also serve as reminders that the universe is not all about us, nor are we isolated from its infinite wonders; rather, we are intimate and integral participants in its evolution.
