MacDonald Gill: Wonderground Map of London Boxed Notecards
The laughter of GODS is yours if you will
As the wish of the artist is.
—MacDonald Gill

“Observe, my dear child, how dexterously has the artist delineated his subject,” says a gentleman in MacDonald “Max” Gill’s 1914 map of London. In this wry work’s self-described “artful devilry,” a motor bus chases a man down Peckham Road (he is not amused); polo players hurl ham hocks instead of swinging mallets; and a cart horse declares “Modestine’s my name, carrots my solace.” This boxed notecard set presents four details of this diverting illustration, meant to attract riders to the Underground, so that you may discover its quips and quirks up close.

Gill (British, 1884–1947), younger brother of sculptor Eric Gill, was a skilled and versatile architect, artist, designer, and illustrator. His poster is in the collection of London Transport Museum, which houses one of the world’s finest poster archives. Each image in this notecard set is a detail of By Paying Us Your Pennies, 1914.

Contains five each of the following notecards:
Oxford Circus
St. James’s Park
Hyde Park
Victoria Station
