Katzutoshi Sugiura Small Boxed Cards

Katzutoshi Sugiura (Japanese, b. 1938) creates unique images of flowers by screenprinting over a background of gold leaf, much in the way that early Japanese folding screens were fashioned to achieve rich, decorative effects. For Iris #118, the artist first applied squares of gold leaf to handmade Japanese paper. He then screenprinted the floral design, finally softening the glittering effect of the gold leaf by covering it with a pale wash. The artist’s works are found in both private and corporate collections, as well as in numerous museums.
